My negative experience with a UI of an Online Banking App (and suggestions to fix it)

Screenshots of the UI where the user needs to set the transfer amount & currency (Left) and the error message (Right)
  • Rule #1- Visibility of System Status: This rule implies that a system should always keep users informed on what’s happening in the system through proper and prompt feedback. When I tapped on the “Currency” field, there was no feedback from the system: the text “Currency” changed to a text pointer on tap, displaying a drop-down menu or a micro-interaction. So, the UI failed to provide proper and prompt feedback to its user.
  • Rule #5- Prevention of Errors: This rule implies that the system should take measures to prevent the users from committing an error. The above UI had no such measures: No default value for currency or no warnings that the user has not selected a value as the currency. Therefore, the UI violates the heuristic 5 of 10 usability heuristics.

My Approach to Fixing the UI:

An annotated image of the redesigned UI for setting up transfer amount and currency. Two fields: Transfer Amount and Transfer Currency are marked as required using an asterick mark. A drop-down mark (a down-ward arrow head) is visible in front of the default value “LKR- Sri Lankan Rupee” in the field for “Currency”.
Redesigned UI for setting up transfer amount and currency
An annotated image of the redesigned “currency” field with an expanded drop-down list of currency options such as AUD, CNY, GBP, etc. GBP is indicated as selected.
Expanded drop-down list for currency options

My Approach to Fixing the error message:

A screenshot of an error message titled as “Cannot Facilitate GBP Transactions”. Description is “We cannot facilitate GBP transactions at the moment due to a technical issue. You can- wait for a few minutes and try again or tap “Change to Default” below to change currency to your default currency- LKR”. Message has two call-action-buttons as “Change to Default” and “Try Again Later”
